South Korean Finance Minister Lee Hyoung-il and U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Michelle Steel backed broader economic cooperation Monday, with both sides linking it to the strength of their alliance.

The Ministry of Finance and Economy said the two met at the government complex in Seoul. Lee asked Steel to help strengthen communication aimed at resolving bilateral trade issues, according to the ministry.

Lee linked the economic agenda to the alliance’s development over seven decades. The ministry said cooperation now spans advanced industries, energy and supply chains alongside security. Lee also said Steel’s understanding of both countries could support stronger economic ties.

The ministry said the two officials viewed a broader economic agenda as serving the Seoul-Washington alliance.
