Democratic Party members on the National Assembly’s Finance and Economy Committee backed a recommendation for about two more years of preparation, while the virtual-asset income tax remains scheduled to start in January 2027.

The recommendation reflects a majority view among party members that more preparation is needed. It does not change the current timetable. After party leaders shape the proposal, the policy committee is expected to discuss it.

The party had planned Oct. 30 discussions with representatives of five exchanges while considering a delay. It cited unfinished tax infrastructure and limited access to exchange trading records as reasons for seeking more time.

Tax rules may change if South Korea’s Digital Asset Basic Act takes effect in the first half of 2027. Overseas tax-information sharing is expected to become more active around 2029.
