Spain’s Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA) said long jumper Julieta Gallego died in the Oct. 28 collision near Urda as regional authorities reported 69 deaths and Europa Press cited a higher, unconfirmed toll.

The federation said Oct. 29 that Gallego, an athlete with AD Sprint, was among those killed in the high-speed train collision in Toledo province.

Adif, Spain’s rail infrastructure manager, said the crash involved a Renfe train and an Iryo train on the Madrid-Seville route. The collision occurred at kilometer 118 of the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed line near Urda. EconoTimes previously reported on support services opened for people affected by the crash.

Castilla-La Mancha’s emergency service reported 69 deaths and 50 people hospitalized in regional health centers in an Oct. 29 update. A later update that day listed 42 people hospitalized in the region.

Europa Press later reported that a file from the Autoridad Administrativa Independiente para la Investigación Técnica de Accidentes e Incidentes ferroviarios, marítimos y de aviación civil (AITAT) listed 74 deaths. The news agency said neither the regional nor national government had confirmed that total.

Official RFEA results list her as Julieta Gallego Gamez and show she placed fourth in the women’s long jump at Spain’s under-23 indoor championships in Antequera on Feb. 5, 2023, with a mark of 5.90 meters. She was 24 when she died.
