Stripe and private equity firm Advent International reportedly offered to acquire PayPal for $60.50 per share in July, valuing the payments company at roughly $53 billion. PayPal rejected the proposal as too low, but negotiations over a higher takeover price remain underway, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The potential Stripe-PayPal deal has fueled investor enthusiasm. PayPal shares climbed about 1.7% on Friday following the report, adding to strong recent gains. PYPL stock surged 32.5% in July, making it the third-best performer in the S&P 500 for the month as takeover speculation intensified.
Under the proposed transaction, Stripe and Advent International would reportedly take equal stakes in the combined company. Reuters reported that the buyers do not intend to break up PayPal following an acquisition.
The size of the potential deal would be substantial, although Stripe's valuation could give it considerable financial capacity. The private fintech company was valued at $159 billion in February 2026, while secondary-market pricing on Hiive indicated a valuation approaching $199 billion as of August 14.
Interest in a PayPal acquisition has been building. Bloomberg previously reported that at least one major PayPal competitor was evaluating a takeover of the entire company, while other prospective buyers were examining individual assets. CNBC's Jim Cramer also recently highlighted reports of Stripe's takeover approach, noting that no agreement had been reached.
A potential PayPal takeover would still face major obstacles. Combining Stripe and PayPal, two leading online payments companies, could attract significant antitrust scrutiny from regulators in the United States and Europe.
Financing also remains unclear, including how Stripe and Advent would divide the cost of an all-cash transaction exceeding $53 billion. PayPal has not publicly confirmed the reported negotiations.
Investors will now be watching whether Stripe and Advent raise their offer above $60.50 per share and whether a higher bid can secure PayPal board approval. If negotiations progress, a deal could reportedly emerge within weeks.
