A forecast from Suzlon Energy Executive Vice Chairman Girish Tanti puts India’s annual wind buildout at 14 GW by 2030, more than twice the country’s 2025 additions.
He expects additions to total 8 GW in 2026. His estimate is for annual growth; India’s 2030 goal of 100 GW refers to cumulative installed wind capacity. The country’s installed wind total stood at 59.20 GW on Sept. 30, 2026.
India added 6.3 GW in calendar 2025, compared with 6.05 GW during fiscal 2025-26. The totals use different reporting periods.
A draft from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) would pair storage with ground-mounted solar and onshore wind projects. Projects commissioned from July 2, 2029, through June 30, 2031, would need storage lasting at least four hours, with capacity of at least 10% of installed plant capacity.
Projects commissioned after July 1, 2027, would face a two-hour minimum, with the same 10% floor based on installed plant capacity. The CEA set Oct. 15 as the deadline for public comments.
