Russia's state news agency TASS reported 613 drones were launched toward Moscow overnight, while Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said air defenses destroyed 231 near the capital, giving two measures of the attack's scale.
Sobyanin said the remaining drones were neutralized farther from the city over the period from Wednesday evening into Thursday morning. The 613 total counted launches; the 231 figure covered reported destruction near Moscow.
Al Jazeera reported that the overnight operation followed earlier major drone strikes on the Moscow region. Air defense forces said they downed more than 1,600 drones during a record assault in September.
In Ukraine, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said on Telegram that a Russian attack damaged an educational institution in the country's second-largest city. His report concerned a separate attack.
