The Guardian reported that Daily Telegraph columnist Allison Pearson is weighing a possible exit as Telegraph Media Group consults on restructuring that could put journalism jobs at risk.
The Guardian, citing unnamed sources, said Pearson had been discussing her future with management and was preparing to explain her next move. The paper said it had asked Pearson for comment; the Telegraph declined to discuss her employment status. Pearson has held a column and the chief interviewer position at the newspaper since 2010, the Guardian reported. It also described tensions between Pearson and some senior editors over subjects in her columns, including immigration. The report did not establish that those tensions or the wider restructuring prompted the talks.
A TMG spokesperson told the Guardian the formal consultation began Oct. 23. The Guardian reported on Oct. 28 that up to 100 journalist roles could be at risk. Its Oct. 23 coverage separately cited newsroom sources who expected as many as 100 people to lose jobs. Reuters cited a person familiar with the matter who estimated cuts could affect about 15% of staff across the newsroom and other parts of the company. The estimates cover different scopes, and TMG has not confirmed a final total.
Axel Springer agreed in March to acquire TMG for £575 million in cash and completed the purchase June 30. The company has said it aims to speed the group’s digital transformation, use artificial intelligence to support innovation and growth, and expand in the U.S. market. TMG CEO Carolin Hulshoff Pol told staff, as reported by the Guardian, that organizational changes and different resource allocation were needed to improve efficiency.
The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) said Oct. 27 it was engaging with management and seeking details about the scale and effects of the proposed redundancies. General Secretary Laura Davison said journalists wanted more information about the potential job losses and their impact on staff.
