England's emergency departments are expected to adopt a child warning score this winter, extending a tool used on wards to emergency care for the first time, The Guardian reported.
The National Paediatric Early Warning System (PEWS) uses observations of a child's vital signs to help care teams track changes in condition and consider how urgently to respond. NHS England's published materials describe the framework and its use in inpatient care.
The Guardian said the planned rollout would bring PEWS into emergency departments. It did not give a specific start date.
A low score does not rule out escalation. NHS England's chart identifies concerns raised by a clinician, parent or carer as reasons to act, giving staff another basis for responding when a child's condition worries those involved in their care.
