A photo gallery published by The National on Oct. 23 brought together French President Emmanuel Macron’s energy diplomacy in the Gulf, a show-jumping event in Giza and Apple’s first foldable iPhone launch.

Macron visited Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia from Oct. 19-21. The Élysée linked the trip to an energy crisis and rising energy prices, saying France aimed to strengthen energy security, diversify supply routes and build economic and strategic partnerships. Its summary described efforts involving oil, gas, diesel and jet fuel, including routes around potential bottlenecks.

The Élysée said France had secured about 100,000 additional metric tons of diesel per month from the UAE. It said a further 100,000 metric tons per month from Bahrain should be confirmed, without giving a date. Macron said France had secured the equivalent of two terawatt-hours of liquefied natural gas per month from Qatar for the winter. Kuwait expressed interest in storing diesel and jet fuel in France, and the Élysée described French households and the economy as intended beneficiaries.

Apple said the iPhone Duo, which it described as its first foldable iPhone, became available in more than 70 countries and regions on Oct. 23. Reuters separately described customers waiting for the release in Singapore, Shanghai, London and Berlin.

The gallery also showed the Longines Global Champions Tour’s Cairo event, with competitions scheduled for Oct. 22-24 against the Great Pyramids of Giza. Longines Timing results show Norwegian rider Geir Gulliksen finished seventh in the Oct. 22 competition with four faults in 73.83 seconds. The FEI schedule listed the Grand Prix for Oct. 24 at 3:30 p.m. UTC+2, with €1 million in prize money.
