Toyota’s first all-electric SUV, produced by Suzuki in India, is scheduled for a 2025 global release. Designed as a pure BEV on a co-developed platform, the SUV aims to offer agile handling, advanced 4WD capabilities, and a sleek design to appeal to growing electric vehicle markets.
Suzuki to Manufacture Toyota's First All-Electric SUV in India by 2025
Electrek reports that in the spring of 2025, Suzuki will start manufacturing the new Toyota all-electric SUV at its Gujarat factory in India.
The new electric vehicle is the product of a growing collaboration between the two companies, with the goal of helping the Japanese car industry weather the influx of new models. Toyota and Suzuki announced the new SUV on Wednesday in a press release that it was built "exclusively as a BEV," meaning that it would not be available with gas or hybrid powertrains.
A "nimble SUV with the sharp driving characteristics of a BEV" was described as the next electric vehicle from Toyota in the press release.
Toyota’s Vision for a “Nimble” All-Electric SUV
A platform that combines the strengths of Suzuki, Toyota, and Daihatsu Motor will power it.
"By leveraging the BEV unit and platform that we jointly developed, we will take a new step in our collaboration in the field of electrified vehicles," stated Koji Sato, president of Toyota.
A four-wheel-drive version of the electric SUV will be on the market soon, "offering exceptional drivability on rough roads and a more powerful driving experience."
Concept Electric SUV eVX: A Glimpse into the New Model’s Design
A mid-size electric SUV with a maximum range of 342 miles (550 km), the Concept Electric SUV eVX was introduced earlier this year by Maruti Suzuki. As a result, we were able to get a rough idea of the new model's appearance.
When compared to the Atto 3 (popular from BYD) and the Crolla Cross (popular from Toyota) at 4,455 mm in length, 1,875 mm in width, and 1,615 mm in height, and 4,300 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, and 1,600 mm in height, the eVX is marginally sleeker.
Global Launch by 2026 Among Toyota’s Expanding EV Lineup
Toyota has said that the new model will be released "worldwide" by 2026 and is one of 10 upcoming electric vehicles. Another electric SUV that Toyota and Subaru co-developed is set to debut in 2026, according to a Nikkei article from earlier this month. The two companies are further strengthening their relationship.
By 2026, Subaru and Toyota plan to release three new electric SUVs. “There is a huge risk for us to go it alone in this field," stated Atsushi Osaki, CEO of the company.
