President Donald Trump called for Philadelphia 76ers forward LeBron James to apologize over his movements during the national anthem, reviving debate about athletes’ conduct during the pregame ceremony.
Reuters reported that Trump wrote on Truth Social Thursday that James had disrespected the United States. The outlet said Trump urged James to apologize to people he called “Great American Warriors and Heroes” who died for the flag, as well as for what the country stands for.
The video came from Philadelphia’s Oct. 20 season opener against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Reuters said it showed James making broad arm motions and basketball shooting gestures while lined up with the 76ers. The Associated Press also reported that he appeared to mimic a golf swing and a jump shot. The NBA’s official game record shows Philadelphia won 106-100; James had 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
The Associated Press reported that James later brushed off the criticism, saying, “It must be a slow news day at the office.”
Trump has criticized athletes’ anthem conduct before, Reuters reported. His earlier objections included Colin Kaepernick, the former NFL quarterback whose decision to kneel during the anthem drew attention to racial justice.
A 2018 dispute also involved the Philadelphia Eagles. The archived White House said the team would not attend a planned celebration with its full roster amid disagreement over Trump’s demand that players stand for the anthem. It announced a separate event honoring the flag.
