President Donald Trump demanded that Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed face metal detector screening at the U.S. Capitol if elected, escalating a campaign attack ahead of Michigan’s Nov. 3 Senate vote.
The Independent reported Trump made the demand Sunday at a rally in Port Huron while campaigning for Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers. Trump accused El-Sayed of ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, which El-Sayed has denied. He also alleged El-Sayed’s family had terrorist ties; The Independent reported that Trump provided no evidence for that claim.
At a town hall in Caro, El-Sayed answered a question about the Muslim Brotherhood by saying he would swear an oath to the U.S. Constitution. Trump had made related accusations during an earlier White House exchange, as EconoTimes previously reported.
The Independent reported that a Marist poll of Michigan likely voters put El-Sayed ahead of Rogers, 50% to 48%. Voters will choose between the candidates in the Nov. 3 election.
