President Donald Trump suggested renaming the Atlantic Ocean at a Mississippi rally, Al Jazeera reported, six days after saying he would probably leave its name unchanged.

Al Jazeera said Trump linked the idea to other geographic naming changes. He said the United States needed a river and an ocean to match Lake America and the Gulf of America, which he said he had renamed.

The suggestion follows Trump’s Oct. 21 statement that he would probably leave the Atlantic’s name unchanged, made at a South Carolina rally.

Executive Order 14422, signed Aug. 27, 2026, sets “Lake America” as the name for Lake Ontario in federal references. Executive Order 14172 directed the Interior secretary to designate the U.S. continental-shelf area in the Gulf of Mexico as “Gulf of America.” Neither order addresses the Atlantic.

The Board on Geographic Names sets standardized names for federal agencies. Private map providers decide whether to use those names, the USGS says.
