U.S. President Donald Trump said he could deploy federal forces in Democratic-run cities over local opposition, raising the prospect of action where mayors oppose cooperation.

During a Tuesday phone interview on The Dan Bongino Show, the host raised the prospect of another period of violence in cities and linked it to Democrats he described as socialist and renewed efforts to defund police. The host then asked whether federal forces might enter liberal cities where mayors opposed cooperation. Trump replied, “There’ll be a point where I’ll do that if I have to.” His answer left open the possibility of action over local objections.

Trump said governors and mayors are expected to request federal assistance. He cited Memphis and New Orleans, saying a governor’s call preceded his actions there. Trump characterized the results as successful.

On Washington, D.C., Trump said, “We virtually don’t have crime in Washington,” and called it “a safe place.”
