President Donald Trump said he believed he could seek the presidency again at an Iowa rally, invoking his claim that he was cheated in 2020 despite the Constitution’s two-election limit.
At Sioux Gateway Airport in Sioux City on Oct. 22, Trump said, “I think I have the right to run again.” He said of the law, “There’s not a lot of wiggle room.” He did not name a year for a possible campaign.
The 22nd Amendment limits a person to being elected president twice. National Archives records list Trump as the winner in 2016 and 2024 and former President Joe Biden as the 2020 winner, with 306 Electoral College votes to Trump’s 232. If Trump won another presidential election, it would be his third victory, beyond the amendment’s limit.
The Associated Press linked Trump’s Iowa appearance to Republican midterm campaigning and named Senate nominee Ashley Hinson among the candidates he was backing. Its report pointed to the Nov. 3 vote as the next scheduled contest in that campaign context. The midterm results will not settle the separate constitutional question around a possible future Trump presidential run.
