BusinessDay reported that President Donald Trump said in a Fox News interview he expects vetoes to bring Democrats to negotiations as they prepare to control both chambers of Congress in January 2027.
“They’ll send over things that are insane, and I’ll veto them,” Trump said. He added: “After a couple of months of vetoes, they’ll call and they’ll say, ‘How do we get this stuff done?’ And we’ll work together.”
The Associated Press reported that Democrats won control of the House and Senate. CBS News separately projected the same outcome. The reports described control of the chambers before a final nationwide seat tally was certified.
BusinessDay reported that Democrats are expected to have greater influence over committee assignments, investigations and the congressional calendar. The outlet said their priorities are expected to include federal spending, taxation and government funding. Trump had raised the veto strategy before the election in an earlier EconoTimes report.
The U.S. Constitution allows Congress to override a presidential veto if two-thirds of members present and voting in each chamber approve the bill again, with a quorum present. Records maintained by the Senate show two vetoes in Trump’s current term, both dated Dec. 29, 2025. He issued 10 vetoes during his first term, and Congress overrode one.
