U.S. President Donald Trump secretly switched to a smaller military aircraft while leaving Turkey last month due to a potential Iranian security threat, according to a Washington Post report published Monday.
Trump had traveled to Ankara for the NATO summit aboard the recently renovated aircraft donated by Qatar. The trip marked the plane’s first international journey in presidential service and came amid heightened tensions involving Iran, which shares a border with Turkey.
Questions about Trump’s travel arrangements emerged when he unexpectedly boarded an older Air Force One aircraft before departing Ankara. The White House had publicly indicated that the president would travel on that plane, but his actual journey reportedly involved an additional security measure.
According to the Washington Post, citing a U.S. official familiar with the operation and another person briefed on the president’s travel, Trump boarded the older Air Force One in view of cameras before being discreetly transported in an airport catering vehicle to an Air Force C-32A.
The smaller military aircraft then carried Trump to Britain, landing at approximately 10:20 p.m. The older Air Force One, which was transporting members of the media, reportedly arrived several minutes later.
Trump had previously said on Truth Social that he planned to fly aboard the older, baby-blue Air Force One from Ankara to RAF Mildenhall in Britain “for old time’s sake.” He also said the newer aircraft would stop at the British base so U.S. military personnel stationed there could tour it.
Responding to questions about the previously undisclosed C-32A flight, White House Communications Director Steve Cheung said the Qatari-donated aircraft had been equipped with advanced security measures designed to protect Trump and his staff.
Cheung added that U.S. officials use all available measures to address threats against the president, noting that America has adversaries who could seek to target him.
The Pentagon did not immediately comment on the reported secret flight.
