After his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Türkiye wants to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as Ankara prepares for possible discussions, Anadolu Agency reported Thursday.

Erdogan made the remarks to reporters on his return flight from South Korea, Anadolu said. He said he wanted to discuss Russia’s position on the conflict with Putin. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and other Turkish officials would continue consulting their Russian counterparts as they prepare for possible talks.

Erdogan said Türkiye would keep working toward peace in Ukraine. He also said it was too early to assess how the U.S. midterm election results could affect Türkiye’s ties with Washington or U.S. policy in the Middle East.

Ankara would maintain dialogue with the U.S. administration, the House of Representatives and the Senate, Erdogan said. He expressed hope that the election results would support lasting peace and stability in the region.
