The U.K. government has offered to work with Wales on how public powers are assigned, a proposal that could shape how decisions affecting Welsh communities are made.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham met Welsh First Minister Rhun Ap Iorwerth at the National Economic Council in Glasgow on Friday, Oct. 30, according to an announcement published Monday. Secretary of State for Wales Stephen Kinnock said the governments can begin considering which level should handle specific responsibilities.
Kinnock described the proposal as a partnership intended to give Welsh communities a greater role and encourage economic growth. He said decisions about local-government arrangements in Wales remain the Welsh Government's responsibility. The U.K. government said it recognizes that authority while offering to work with the Welsh administration on wider questions of responsibility.
The Glasgow meeting preceded the launch of policy work on regional growth and industrial policy, including a parallel process between U.K. and Welsh officials, EconoTimes reported in its earlier coverage of talks with Scotland and Wales.
