The U.S. Embassy in the United Arab Emirates urged Americans already in the Middle East to prepare for travel interruptions after Iranian-supported Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, warning the hostilities could spread beyond the immediate area.

The embassy advised Americans planning trips to or from the region to follow airline and airport notices and make backup plans. Those already in the Middle East were told to be ready for possible flight cancellations and airspace closures.

The alert said the attacks struck civilian airports and other key infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, resulting in civilian casualties and serious travel disruption. “The hostilities have the potential to escalate rapidly beyond that immediate area,” the embassy said. It also warned that Iran or groups aligned with it might target U.S. interests overseas, including businesses and other institutions.

The State Department’s Oct. 12 travel advisory for Saudi Arabia advises Americans to reconsider travel there. It cites, among other risks, the possibility that Iran and the Iranian-supported Houthis could target American interests with drones or missiles.
