President Donald Trump said he knew nothing about a possible attack on Iran after U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack said a strike could happen this weekend.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported that Barrack made the comment Friday in an interview with podcast host Mario Nawfal while visiting the Gulf. Asked whether a strike could happen over the weekend, Barrack replied, “Absolutely.”
Barrack said Trump remained open to a deal and that talks had been underway for months. Asked about Barrack’s remarks in Florida, Trump told reporters, “If that’s the case, I don’t know anything about it,” AFP reported.
Barrack said the United States was not seeking to remove Iran’s government and questioned what would happen the day after a change in power.
The remarks came a day after foreign ministers from eight countries met in Istanbul. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said participants favored diplomacy at the Oct. 23 Istanbul meeting.
Neither comment said an attack had been authorized.
