U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres urged a prompt, thorough, independent and impartial inquiry into the killing of former Guatemalan anti-corruption prosecutor Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa and another man in Guatemala City.
Solórzano Foppa, who also led Guatemala’s tax authority, and Gustavo Adolfo Aguilar Gamarro were killed Oct. 17 at the Campo Marte sports complex, Guatemala’s Interior Ministry said.
U.N. spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric conveyed Guterres’ appeal at an Oct. 19 briefing. Guterres urged authorities to bring those responsible to justice. He also called for conditions that allow people to work safely and effectively on the rule of law, corruption and human rights, and to participate in public life.
Interior Minister Marco Antonio Villeda said four police teams were investigating, including through video, ballistic and witness evidence. Investigators had not established a motive, he said. The ministry reported two arrests and said authorities were searching for two other people who may have participated in the attack.
Villeda said Solórzano Foppa had a police protection arrangement because of his former prosecutorial work. Those measures were increased in 2025.
Guatemala’s Ministerio Público (MP) said evidence had been collected, preserved and sent for technical and scientific analysis. It said the investigation had technical support from international partners and that it was withholding further details to protect the inquiry.
