The United States has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit in Miami, Florida, in December, potentially creating an opportunity for another meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the invitation on Wednesday after talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The Kremlin said Moscow would consider the proposal through diplomatic channels.
Rubio said Washington remains willing to engage Russia over the war in Ukraine despite limited progress in efforts to negotiate an end to the conflict.
“We’ve invited President Putin to the G20. We think it’s an opportunity for him to engage not just with the president but with other world leaders. We hope that’s an invitation he’ll accept,” Rubio said.
Putin and Trump previously met in Anchorage, Alaska, in August last year. However, the Russian leader has not traveled to the contiguous United States since before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Russian news agencies cited Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as welcoming the G20 invitation while stopping short of confirming Putin’s attendance.
“We are grateful and appreciative for this invitation,” Peskov said, adding that Moscow would make a decision and handle the matter through diplomatic channels.
A Putin appearance at the Miami G20 would provide another venue for direct Russia-U.S. diplomacy as Washington continues efforts to address the Ukraine war. It would also give Putin an opportunity to meet other international leaders gathered for the summit.
Rubio said Trump could also hold another meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the G20. Xi is arriving in Washington on Wednesday for a state visit.
The secretary of state added that Trump and Xi could potentially meet at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen as well, highlighting a busy diplomatic calendar involving the United States, China and Russia.
