The U.S. military announced Tuesday that American and Saudi Arabian armed forces carried out coordinated precision strikes in Iraq targeting Iran-backed militant groups accused of threatening regional security. According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation took place on July 28 and focused on militants aligned with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
CENTCOM said the targeted groups had been directed by the IRGC to launch attacks against U.S. military personnel stationed in the region as well as Saudi Arabia’s critical energy infrastructure. The joint operation was designed to weaken the militants’ capabilities and deter future attacks that could further destabilize the Middle East.
In an official statement, the U.S. military described the strikes as precise and coordinated with Saudi Arabia’s armed forces. The operation underscores the ongoing security partnership between Washington and Riyadh in responding to threats posed by Iran-backed militant organizations operating in Iraq.
Military officials also stated that the attempted attacks against U.S. forces were unsuccessful, with no indication that the militants achieved their objectives. The strikes reflect continued efforts by the United States and its regional allies to protect military personnel, safeguard strategic energy facilities, and counter the influence of Iran-backed groups.
The latest operation comes amid heightened tensions across the Middle East, where Iran-aligned militias have been accused of increasing attacks on U.S. interests and key regional infrastructure. U.S. officials have repeatedly warned that any threats against American forces or allied assets will be met with decisive action.
The joint strikes highlight the commitment of both the United States and Saudi Arabia to maintaining regional stability while disrupting militant networks linked to the IRGC. The operation also signals continued cooperation between the two countries in addressing evolving security challenges across Iraq and the broader Middle East.
