Total US federal debt outstanding stood at $40.55 trillion on Nov. 3, including debt held by the public and intragovernmental holdings, the US Department of the Treasury said.
The total was $298.3 billion, or 0.7%, above its Oct. 5 level. It was also $2.54 trillion, or 6.7%, higher than on Nov. 3, 2025, the department said.
Debt held by the public accounted for $32.77 trillion of the outstanding balance. Intragovernmental holdings, the other component of the total, accounted for $7.78 trillion on the same date.
The two comparisons measure changes over different periods: about one month from Oct. 5 and one year from Nov. 3, 2025. Both use the total outstanding debt recorded on Nov. 3.
Separately, the department recorded $73.5 billion in accrued interest expense for October, the latest available month. Accrued interest is interest recorded as an expense, rather than necessarily paid during the month.
The fiscal year-to-date interest expense was also $73.5 billion for fiscal 2027. The interest figures cover the record month dated Oct. 31, while the outstanding debt balance was recorded three days later.
Treasury notes accounted for the largest interest category, with $45.8 billion accrued in October. The same category accounted for $45.8 billion of the interest expense recorded so far in fiscal 2027.
Treasury bonds were the next-largest category, accounting for $16 billion in October interest expense. Their fiscal year-to-date expense also stood at $16 billion, below the amount attributable to Treasury notes.
Inflation compensation on Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities accounted for another $6.4 billion in October. This category covers compensation tied to inflation on those securities, and its fiscal 2027 total was also $6.4 billion.
Treasury floating rate notes accounted for $2.6 billion in accrued interest during October. Their fiscal year-to-date total matched the monthly amount, as it did for every interest category supplied by the department.
The department separately recorded $2.5 billion in October interest expense under its Inflation Protected Securities category. That amount was distinct from the inflation compensation category, with another $2.5 billion recorded for the fiscal year to date.
The category covering state and local government certificates of indebtedness, notes and bonds accounted for $227.1 million in October. Its fiscal 2027 expense to date was also $227.1 million, the smallest of the interest categories listed.
