Data from Edelman Trust Barometer of 2017 shows that the public trusts in the news media in the United States have declined to the lowest level ever. Only 32 percent of the American Public trusts the news media, which is even lower at 14 percent when it comes to Republicans and 51 percent in the case of Democrats. Like we have written in the past; this is truly the dark days for journalism, and the journalists have only themselves to blame.
The job of a journalist to present the news and if he/she is presenting views then it has to be based on real facts, not an ideology and if it is an ideological discussion there are opinion and editorial pages. But recently, most of the news media have focused to bring the ideology to the front as much as possible and search for facts or making up facts to support them. Currently, the motto seems to be, “Just oppose Trump”.
Perhaps we journalist can learn some honesty from the Berkshire Hathaway’s Vice-Chair Charlie Munger. Both Mr. Munger and his famous partner Warren Buffet have been vocal supporters of Hillary Clinton during the campaign but after the election they both have accepted the outcome. Mr. Buffet even said, he doesn’t have a grim look for the future ahead.
This is what Mr. Munger had to say when he was asked about the disaffected, millennial protesters around the country,
“I don’t like all that. Basically, I’m not in favor of young people agitating and trying to change the whole world because they know so much. I think young people should learn more and shop less, so I’m not sympathetic to anybody. Young people are out in the streets agitating—that’s not my system. I think if you’ve got Hitler or something you can agitate. But short of that, young people should learn more and shop less……He’s not wrong on everything. And just because he isn’t like us, roll with it. If there’s a little danger, what the hell, you’re not going to live forever anyway…….And when Donald Trump says he wouldn’t touch Social Security and Republicans have all kinds of schemes for revising Social Security — I’m with Donald Trump. If I were running the world … I wouldn’t touch Social Security.”
