Uilm said a diesel-hybrid trial for the next Fiat Ducato could help light commercial vehicles lower emissions and address buyer demand, after discussing the project with Stellantis in Rome on Oct. 15.

At the meeting, Gianluca Ficco, Uilm's national secretary for the automotive sector, called the trial “positive news” for both plants.

Plans call for the engine to be produced at Pratola Serra, while Atessa is slated to assemble vans under a project with a $1.12 billion investment.

The lineup plan for Stellantis' upcoming mid-size and large vans names battery-electric, hybrid and conventional combustion power, with no diesel-hybrid option specified. Production of the next large-van generation is targeted for early 2029, but that timing gives no date for a diesel-hybrid launch.
