Ukraine is scrambling to develop new air-defense weapons as Russia dramatically expands its use of fast, jet-powered attack drones that are proving difficult for existing interceptor systems to defeat.

A Ukrainian military test in early July highlighted the challenge. Producers were invited to demonstrate a new generation of interceptor drones, but many struggled to control their aircraft at speeds exceeding 400 kilometers per hour, with some prototypes crashing into fields and forests, according to sources familiar with the exercise.

Russia increased its deployment of jet-powered drones roughly sixfold during three months this summer, Ukrainian military data showed. Moscow launched about 450 drones traveling between 240 and 500 km/h in June, rising to roughly 2,850 in August. Ukrainian intelligence estimates Russia can now manufacture around 3,000 jet-powered drones monthly.

Kyiv and the surrounding region have been the primary targets, accounting for nearly one-fifth of launches. Odesa, a crucial Black Sea export hub, has also faced heavy attacks.

Ukraine previously achieved interception rates of around 90% against slower Shahed-type drones, which typically travel below 200 km/h. Low-cost Ukrainian interceptor drones, often priced below $2,000, became an important defensive weapon. However, most cannot catch Russia’s newer jet-powered models.

Ukraine is now exploring faster interceptors, inexpensive guided missiles, artificial intelligence targeting and advanced electronic warfare. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said more than 60 Ukrainian companies are developing systems capable of intercepting jet drones, although only a small number have demonstrated successful results.

Deputy air force commander Yuriy Cherevashenko said Ukraine is nearing mass production of several affordable counter-drone solutions. Head-on interceptions using automated guidance software and manually controlled drones have already succeeded in tests.

Electronic warfare is also evolving as Russian drones become increasingly resistant to GPS jamming. Ukrainian developers are examining networked systems capable of feeding drones false navigation data and steering them away from populated areas.

Until these technologies can be deployed at scale, Ukrainian military aircraft remain crucial for intercepting the fastest drones. Limited air-to-air missile supplies, however, are increasingly forcing pilots to use aircraft cannons, creating additional risks as Russia intensifies its aerial campaign.
