Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) said Denmark redirected part of a planned ammunition sale after Ukraine asked for more 20 mm rounds for its F-16 fleet.

In an announcement dated Oct. 22, the ministry said more than 50,000 rounds had reached Ukraine. It said pilots were using the ammunition from F-16 cannons to counter Shahed-type attack drones powered by jet engines, helping defend cities from air attacks. The ministry did not provide an exact count or delivery date.

The ministry said a partner country agreed to the change to the planned sale. It did not identify the country or state the sale’s size.

During the shift to F-35 aircraft, Denmark had already allocated much of its 20 mm ammunition, either by sending it to Ukraine or selling it to partners, the ministry said.

On Aug. 12, 2024, Denmark’s armed forces announced that the country had handed over the first aircraft from a 19-jet F-16 donation to Ukraine.
