Ukraine Tests New Anti-Drone Weapon After Successful Shahed Intercept

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Ukraine is testing a new domestically developed weapon designed to intercept drones, with the system successfully destroying an Iranian-designed Shahed drone during an overnight attack.

Speaking in his nightly video address on Tuesday, Zelenskiy said the Ukrainian development had recorded a successful hit but still required additional technical improvements before it could be fully deployed.

“Another development is undergoing testing. It’s a Ukrainian development and it scored a hit, the ‘shahed’ was destroyed,” Zelenskiy said. He added that developers needed more time to refine some technical aspects, while work on other Ukrainian defense projects was continuing.

Ukraine’s military said its forces destroyed 187 airborne targets during the overnight assault. According to Zelenskiy, Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 93% of all Russian drones launched during the attack.

“That is significant. But, of course, more is needed,” he said.

Ukraine has accelerated the development of anti-drone technology since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Kyiv has increasingly focused on interceptor systems that can destroy incoming drones at a lower cost than conventional air-defense missiles.

The country has also begun sharing its growing expertise in counter-drone warfare with other nations, including countries in the Middle East that have faced attacks involving Iranian weapons.

However, Russian ballistic missiles remain a more difficult challenge for Ukrainian air defenses. Kyiv has repeatedly urged Western allies to increase supplies of missile interceptors capable of countering these threats.

Ukraine is also pushing for faster development of Freyja, a European-designed air defense system intended to strengthen protection against aerial attacks.

The latest successful test highlights Ukraine’s continuing effort to expand domestic defense production and develop more cost-effective ways to counter Russia’s large-scale drone operations.
