Kia has issued an urgent recall for more than 12,000 EV9 SUVs after identifying a software glitch in the Remote Smart Parking Assist that could lead to brake failures during low-speed parking, posing a collision risk.

Kia's Remote Smart Parking Assist Issue

The Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) feature is meant to park your EV9 or summon it when it is parked with the press of a button (for more information, watch the video that is provided below), Electrek reports.

For the purpose of maneuvering the car to and from a parking spot, Kia's RSPA makes use of sensors to execute remote control of the steering wheel, speed, and gearshifts of the vehicle. That being said, a problem may occur as a result of a recently found issue in the software that controls the Integrated Electronic Brake (IEB).

Brake Pressure Problem Discovered

Consequently, the system might not apply sufficient brake pressure when the vehicle is stopped frequently or when it is moving at a speed of less than two miles per hour.

At the beginning of this month, Kia became aware of the problem after an EV9 model in Korea that was utilizing the technology was involved in a collision with a parked vehicle. On September 17, 2024, Kia informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the recall, which possibly affected 12,400 2024 EV9 cars.

Recall Notification to Owners

As of the 18th of October in 2024, it is anticipated that owner notice letters will be mailed out. No additional cost will be incurred by Kia dealers in order to upgrade the IEB software with "improved logic."
