In a Bloomberg interview, Sen. Chris Van Hollen tied his support for the next Senate Democratic leader to commitments on a bold agenda challenging powerful corporate interests.
Van Hollen made the case in an interview with Bloomberg, which reported the remarks Wednesday. “No one should be committing to anybody as the next Democratic leader without having that conversation,” Van Hollen told Bloomberg.
He described Democrats' midterm gains as a response to voters' concerns about democratic governance and household finances, rather than a strategy directed by party leaders in Washington, Bloomberg reported. Van Hollen has urged Democrats to put working people at the center of party policy and push back against the political influence of billionaires and major companies, the outlet reported.
Democrats won control of both the House and Senate in the midterms. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has told reporters he expects to be elected majority leader and said the party should focus on what Americans want.
