Vietnam’s trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association connects it with four European countries, while Swiss President Guy Parmelin has proposed separate cooperation in blockchain, artificial intelligence and quantum technology.

According to EFTA, the Hanoi pact, signed Oct. 18, covers investment, intellectual property, public procurement, goods and services. Entry into force remains pending.

EFTA comprises Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein. EFTA reported €4.8 billion in trade with Vietnam in 2025, with Vietnam recording a €2.5 billion surplus.

Vietnam Government News said Swiss President Guy Parmelin proposed linking Switzerland’s Crypto Valley with Vietnam’s innovation sector during a Hanoi visit on Oct. 17. Its report listed blockchain, artificial intelligence and quantum technology as areas for cooperation, without specifying a project, funding commitment or schedule. The technology initiative was separate from the pact’s wider economic provisions.
