Volvo Cars is preparing a major product expansion with plans to introduce 13 new models by 2030, as the Swedish automaker looks to strengthen its global lineup, revive sales growth and improve profitability.
The company announced the strategy ahead of its investor day in Stockholm on Thursday. Under CEO Hakan Samuelsson, Volvo Cars has been simplifying its product portfolio while adopting a more regional approach to vehicle development. The strategy focuses on tailoring models to specific markets while reducing the level of individual customization.
Of the 13 planned Volvo models, six will target the Chinese market and seven will be designed for Western markets. The expanded lineup forms part of Volvo's effort to achieve an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margin above 8%, compared with 3.5% in 2025.
Volvo's seven new vehicles for Western markets will use the company's SPA2 and SPA3 platforms. Meanwhile, the six China-focused models will be developed in collaboration with sister company Geely Auto, allowing Volvo to capitalize on shared technology and development resources.
The automaker is also maintaining electrification as a central part of its long-term growth strategy. Volvo believes its regionalized product lineup, electric vehicle expertise and closer cooperation with Geely can help the company compete more effectively across major automotive markets.
"Our product offensive builds on four unique strengths: regionalised product offerings, leadership in electrification, unique synergies with Geely, and complete customer offers that goes beyond the car alone," Samuelsson said.
The planned model rollout represents a significant expansion of Volvo Cars' global product strategy as competition intensifies across the electric vehicle and premium automotive sectors. By creating dedicated products for China and Western markets, Volvo aims to respond more closely to regional consumer preferences while improving efficiency through shared platforms and partnerships.
The strategy also highlights Volvo's push to translate its upcoming product launches into stronger sales and higher margins by the end of the decade.
