Volvo Group plans to launch Volvo Mining in 2027 to offer trucks, construction equipment and autonomous transport solutions together, targeting mine operators seeking to coordinate equipment across their sites.

Volvo Mining will operate within Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) and initially focus on customers in Sweden, Norway and Finland, Volvo said Oct. 19. The unit is scheduled to begin on Jan. 1, 2027.

The planned unit will sell to mining companies and contractors, manage Volvo’s mining product and service portfolio globally, and coordinate research. Volvo said it would provide dedicated financial resources for the business. It gave no investment amount, sales target or timetable for entering markets beyond the initial three countries.

Volvo says mines use different types of equipment for excavation, loading and transport, creating a reason to offer its products as a coordinated package. The company cited demand for higher productivity, safer operations and lower emissions, but gave no estimate of gains tied to Volvo Mining. “Customers make long-term investments and value trusted partners,” said Roger Alm, president of Volvo Trucks.

Volvo already runs an autonomous hauling operation in Norway, one of the unit’s initial markets. As of May 28, 2025, its fleet of seven Volvo FH trucks had moved more than 1 million metric tons of limestone for Brønnøy Kalk. Together, the trucks had traveled more than 220,000 kilometers, Volvo said.

Volvo established Volvo Autonomous Solutions as a business area in 2020 and identified mining as one of its target sectors. Its 2025 annual report said mining and infrastructure investment supported construction equipment market growth in Indonesia, Vietnam, the Middle East and Africa that year.

Per-Erik Lindström, currently senior vice president of Volvo Trucks International, has been appointed to lead Volvo Mining from its Jan. 1 launch. Volvo Group is scheduled to report its third-quarter 2026 results on Oct. 23.
