Wells Fargo Expands Stablecoin Plans With 20 Major Banks

Wells Fargo Expands Stablecoin Plans With 20 Major Banks.

Wells Fargo is expanding its presence in the digital asset industry through stablecoin initiatives, blockchain payment services, and a partnership with 20 major international banks. CEO Charlie Scharf outlined the bank’s strategy during its third-quarter earnings call on October 13, highlighting preparations for emerging opportunities in the U.S. stablecoin market.

Scharf acknowledged that demand for stablecoins in the United States remains uncertain. However, Wells Fargo is developing blockchain-based financial solutions to position itself for potential growth in digital payments.

“Use cases in the US for stablecoins remain unclear, but we’re building solutions to be prepared as opportunities potentially unfold,” Scharf said.

The banking giant is increasing investments in traditional and digital payment infrastructure, particularly systems designed to improve corporate settlements and transaction efficiency. Wells Fargo has also explored cryptocurrency partnerships, including reported discussions with Kraken’s parent company, Payward, regarding potential crypto trading liquidity services.

Meanwhile, Wells Fargo is collaborating with 20 international financial institutions to establish a stablecoin-focused company. The consortium includes Bank of America, Citi, Goldman Sachs, and Deutsche Bank, among other major lenders.

Announced in September, the venture aims to establish the company during the second half of 2026, subject to closing conditions. Its first U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin is expected to launch in the first half of 2027.

The participating banks also plan to explore additional currencies, including the euro. The stablecoin initiative targets retail and institutional customers, with potential applications in cross-border payments and digital asset settlements.

Regulatory considerations will include the U.S. GENIUS Act and the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework. The venture remains under development, with no official company name announced.

Separately, Wells Fargo has introduced tokenized deposits for corporate and commercial customers. Its blockchain-powered platform supports round-the-clock payments, reflecting growing institutional interest in tokenized banking infrastructure.

Other financial institutions are pursuing similar developments. HSBC and Ant Digital recently tested blockchain-based tokenized deposits for automated payment transactions.

The expansion comes as Wells Fargo reported stronger third-quarter financial results. Net income increased to $5.95 billion from $5.59 billion a year earlier, while revenue climbed 2% to $21.87 billion.

These developments highlight Wells Fargo’s efforts to strengthen its digital payments capabilities while preparing for wider institutional adoption of stablecoins and blockchain technology.
