Westchester Plastic Surgeon Discusses Types of Eyelid Surgery

SCARSDALE, N.Y., April 19, 2018 -- Dr. Neal Goldberg, a Westchester County plastic surgeon, explains how patients should be aware of the three primary types of eyelid surgery to determine which approach or approaches can help achieve their functional and cosmetic goals.

Medically known as blepharoplasty, Dr. Goldberg says that eyelid surgery can be broken down into three main categories: upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, and Asian blepharoplasty (or double-eyelid surgery). Each main category may also have several possible techniques that can be used to achieve the same objective. Dr. Goldberg notes that lower blepharoplasty and Asian double-eyelid surgery are designed for cosmetic enhancement, while upper blepharoplasty can be performed for aesthetic or functional reasons.

In upper eyelid surgery, excess skin and fat and loose muscles can be trimmed and tightened to restore a more youthful appearance to the eye area. Dr. Goldberg adds that, for some patients, excess skin can become severe enough to obstruct their vision. In this case, the loose tissue is removed to widen the range of sight, a medical more than cosmetic concern.

In lower eyelid surgery, Dr. Goldberg says excess tissue is also removed, but the most common concern is excess fatty tissue, which can cause a “baggy” effect in the under-eye area. In many instances, Dr. Goldberg says patients may wish to rejuvenate the upper and lower eyelids at the same time for more comprehensive cosmetic improvement and to ensure the results are as balanced and harmonious as possible.

For double-eyelid surgery, individuals with a “monolid,” which commonly includes people of Asian descent, can create a crease in their eyelids for a different aesthetic effect. Dr. Goldberg explains that some patients prefer the appearance of a double eyelid, and this procedure can help them achieve that goal.

As with any surgical procedure, Dr. Goldberg says it is important for patients to discuss their concerns and goals with an experienced and board-certified plastic surgeon. An extensively trained physician can review the individual’s medical history and characteristics to determine if they are a good candidate for the procedure, or if another technique may be more effective.

Dr. Goldberg says that elective procedures generally will not be covered by medical insurance; however, if a patient is receiving upper eyelid surgery to address excess skin that is blocking their range of vision, all or part of the procedure may be included in a policy. He recommends people considering this procedure speak with their medical insurance agent to determine their benefits before making a decision. Dr. Goldberg adds that many physicians offer plastic surgery financing options as a convenience for their patients.
