HBO's sci-fi series “Westworld” has captured the imagination of many fans since it aired its first season back in 2016. Based on the 1973 movie by the late famed author Michael Crichton, the show has explored what it means to be human or, at an even deeper level, what the relationship between consciousness and choice means for self-aware beings.
As fans remember, season 2 gave some of the park's inhabitants the choice to leave or to make their way to the outside world. Others were uploaded to the valley beyond. Regardless of their choices, the characters now face the problem of figuring out where to go next after the massive upheavals of season 2.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Westworld's creators, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, talked about how season 3 will be a drastic shift of narrative compared to the escape and choice storylines of “Westworld” season 1 and season 2.
In the interview, Nolan talked about how the characters' non-human nature affects their worldviews as essentially immortal beings and how this will drive the storylines of “Westworld” season 3. The drastic shift in perspective is described by Joy as similar to the show repiloting, considering the scope and space for storytelling that “Westword” season 3 has been given after season 2's end.
Fans will also be intrigued by Joy's statement that Tessa Thompson, who plays Charlotte Hale, will most probably return in season 3 even after her character was killed in season 2. Thankfully, “Westworld” is the kind of show where a character's death doesn't necessarily mean the total erasure of the said character from the show's future.
HBO has yet to provide a release date for “Westworld” season 3. Considering that the show's first season was followed by the second season by at least a year and a couple of months, fans can hopefully expect “Westworld” season 3 to come sometime in late 2019 or in early 2020.
