The XRP Ledger applies its 80% consensus threshold to each server’s chosen validator list, while its more than 150 validators and default list of more than 35 describe different groups.
A server sets its validator pool through a Unique Node List (UNL). The 80% test is calculated against the validators on that server’s chosen list, which determines the set considered in its consensus process.
The ledger’s full validator population exceeds 150, while the default UNL contains more than 35. The figures describe the broader network and one smaller list within it. A July 2023 count placed one Ripple-operated validator on the default list. Ripple’s participation in the public blockchain carries rights equal to those of other contributors.
David Schwartz, Ripple CTO Emeritus, said in an interview dated Aug. 6, 2025: “We have no interest or desire in running the network.”
