The yen strengthened against the dollar and euro over the week ended Oct. 23, while Singapore Exchange began preparing for a future chief executive transition without setting a date.

Using the midpoint of each BOJ range, the yen gained about 0.8% against the dollar and 0.7% against the euro between Oct. 19 and Oct. 23. In the central bank’s 8 a.m. UTC (5 p.m. Japan Standard Time) observations, the dollar range moved from 158.16–158.18 yen to 156.95–156.97 yen. The euro ranges were 176.96–177.00 yen and 175.76–175.80 yen, respectively. The BOJ says its daily foreign-exchange figures draw on market participants’ information and may be revised.

Reuters linked demand for safer assets to an equity sell-off and investor concerns about future returns from artificial-intelligence investments. The outlet reported that the yen briefly reached 156.08 per dollar on Oct. 23 before moving back to 156.89 later that day. Reuters also said the euro touched 175.08 yen, its lowest level since October 2025. EconoTimes previously covered safe-haven demand behind the yen’s weekly rise.

Separately, Loh told shareholders at Singapore Exchange’s Oct. 23 annual general meeting that he had spoken with the chairman about beginning preparations for an eventual CEO transition. His contract runs until mid-July 2027, and he said he would work with the chairman and board on the timing and arrangements. “We are not setting a specific date for the transition today,” Loh said in an SGXNet statement, which did not name a successor. SGX appointed Loh effective July 14, 2015.

The next policy meetings are scheduled for the Federal Open Market Committee on Oct. 27–28, the European Central Bank Governing Council on Oct. 28–29 and the BOJ on Oct. 29–30. The BOJ’s Outlook Report “Bank’s View” is scheduled for Oct. 30.
