Managers at the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant reported that a station driver was killed Oct. 21, and separately warned that drone attacks on staff buses endangered plant workers.
The plant’s administration said in a Telegram statement that employee buses were attacked on successive days. Reuters described the attacks as Ukrainian drone strikes. Managers called the pattern deliberate and said it put personnel responsible for the plant’s operations at risk.
Reuters also reported that Russia has recently accused Ukraine of attacks on plant-related locations and transport. The outlet said Moscow and Kyiv have repeatedly accused each other of military activity that could threaten nuclear safety.
Russian forces took control of the six-reactor facility during the early weeks of the February 2022 invasion. The plant is Europe’s largest nuclear power station.
Rosatom, Russia’s state nuclear corporation, said a separate attack in July killed the plant’s chief engineer and a service-car driver, blaming a Ukrainian drone. Last week, the company said a truce mediated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was allowing repairs at a thermal power station that supplies the nuclear plant.
