Zcash (ZEC) developers are preparing to introduce quantum-resistant security features in January 2027, aiming to protect cryptocurrency wallets against potential threats from advanced quantum computing and artificial intelligence.
Roman Akhtariev, an engineer working on Zakura, a software implementation used to validate Zcash transactions, revealed that the team expects to introduce post-quantum signature opcodes in January. However, an official network activation date has not been confirmed.
The proposed Zcash upgrade would enable the blockchain to verify hash-based digital signatures, offering stronger protection against attacks that could potentially compromise existing cryptocurrency wallet keys.
Unlike traditional cryptographic signatures, hash-based signatures rely on digital fingerprints generated from secret information. This approach could help prevent attackers from forging transaction approvals even if future computing breakthroughs weaken current security systems.
The development follows warnings from Ethereum researcher Justin Drake, who urged cryptocurrency holders to consider a defensive strategy known as "bunker mode." Drake warned that AI-assisted mathematical breakthroughs could potentially threaten Bitcoin and Ethereum wallet security within months under a worst-case scenario.
Ethereum is separately targeting December 2029 for its broader transition toward quantum-resistant cryptography. However, researchers have not demonstrated a practical attack capable of compromising existing cryptocurrency wallet keys.
Zcash's proposed January upgrade primarily targets transparent transactions, which publicly display wallet addresses and payment amounts.
According to ZecStats data, approximately 11.96 million of the 16.98 million ZEC in circulation were held in transparent addresses on Thursday, representing roughly 70% of the cryptocurrency's supply.
The network also supports shielded transactions, which conceal transaction details, including sender information, recipient addresses and transferred amounts.
Beyond quantum-resistant signatures, Zakura is developing privacy-enhancing wallet technology using private information retrieval. This allows users to check balances without revealing their wallet addresses to the servers processing those requests.
An experimental implementation is already accessible through the "Private queries" feature in the Vizor wallet.
Nevertheless, Zcash's shielded transaction system requires additional security improvements because encrypted payment records could potentially become vulnerable to future quantum attacks.
Meanwhile, ZEC closed Thursday near $1,185, reflecting an approximately 11% weekly decline as concerns surrounding cryptocurrency security weighed on digital asset markets.
