Zcash (ZEC) development pools, valued together above $300 million, have become a flashpoint in community member joshs’ push to end block-reward funding early, reviving debate over control of grants.

The five-member Zcash Community Grants (ZCG) committee administers an 8% share. Coinholders vote every quarter on how a separate 12% retroactive-grant pool is distributed. joshs said rising ZEC prices pushed the combined value of both pools above $300 million.

joshs said he put forward the current arrangement in 2025, when funding was limited. He says privately financed teams have since joined the ecosystem, funding is no longer scarce and ZEC holdings let people buy voting influence over grants, which he describes as control over Zcash itself.

Earlier proposals have also addressed changes to Zcash’s block-reward funding, including removing the committee’s 8% channel while retaining the coinholder pool. joshs said changing only one channel would be insufficient; he favors keeping both until the deadline or ending them together.

He said some community members worried that opposing the funding arrangement could jeopardize future support. Both allocations are scheduled to continue until November 2028.
