Senior Lecturer in PR Media and Communications, Media, Swansea University

Senior Lecturer in PR Media and Communications, Media, Swansea University Jonathan joined Swansea University as Senior Lecturer in PR, Media, and Communications in 2022 where he teaches across a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate modules mainly focusing on public relations, sport, and journalism. Alongside his teaching Jonathan’s research career originally began by examining protest and its utilisation for pollical communication before shifting focus to concentrate more fully on the world of sport and its relationship with wider society. His work includes: the use of football related clickbait on social media by major media organisations; constructions of nationalism among ‘proper football men’; the newspaper representation of England men’s football international Raheem Sterling compared to Sterling’s self-representation on social media; and fan reactions on social media to suspected racism during a football match among others. Due to these expertise he’s been used as a source for media outlets such as The Athletic, BBC Radio Gloucestershire, and French football website SoFoot. Jonathan is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and is an external examiner at Chester University, and Edge Hill University. Jonathan sits on the editorial board of the Football Collective whose aim is to bring critical debate to football, and is a member of the Football Writers Association. He also acts as an Associate Editor for the Sport Section of the academic journal Cogent Social Sciences.

Jhordanne Jones

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Climate and Weather Extremes, Purdue University

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Climate and Weather Extremes, Purdue University Jhordanne Jones is a NOAA Climate & Global Change postdoc fellow hosted by Purdue University. Her research examines the degree of predictability achieved from large-scale environmental phenomena for seasonal tropical cyclone activity. Tools being used to explore this TC-environment predictability are global reanalysis datasets, climate model output, and simulations.

Assistant Professor of Statistics, Purdue University

Assistant Professor of Statistics, Purdue University My primary research interest is in data privacy, where the goal is to publish meaningful statistical results on sensitive datasets, without compromising the privacy of the participants in the dataset. In particular, I mostly work in the framework of differential privacy, which has been adopted by a number of tech companies as well as the US Census. Some data privacy problems that I am particularly interested in are 1) performing valid statistical inference subject to privacy constraints (e.g., confidence intervals, hypothesis tests, posterior inference), 2) designing privacy-aware algorithms for a variety of tasks (e.g., functional data analysis, topological data analysis), and 3) foundations of data privacy (e.g., definitions of privacy, optimizing basic privacy mechanisms) I also work with a variety of scientists as an applied Statistician on problems related to 1) diagnosing and treating voice disorders, 2) developing novel methods of low-cost spirometry, and 3) studying the basic laws of physics. Before transitioning to Statistics, I worked on dicrete mathematics problems in graph theory, matroid theory, and discrete geometries. I studied at Clarion University from 2011-2014, earning a B.S. in Mathematics. After this, I completed a M.A. in Mathematics at Brandeis University in 2016 under the advisement of Dr. Olivier Bernardi. In May of 2020, I completed my Ph.D. in Statistics at Penn State University, advised by Dr. Aleksandra Slavkovic and Dr. Matthew Reimherr. Currently I am an Assistant Professor of Statistics at Purdue University. I also work as a differential privacy consultant for the federal non-profit, MITRE.

Joseph P. Allen

Professor of Psychology, University of Virginia

Professor of Psychology, University of Virginia Joseph P. Allen is the Hugh P. Kelly Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia. He received a B.A. in psychology from the University of Virginia in May 1980, and then a Ph. D. in Clinical/Community Psychology from Yale University in May 1986. He subsequently worked as a post-doctoral fellow in research at Harvard Medical School from 1986 until 1988. Allen's research focuses on adolescent social development, family relations, peer relations, and problematic behaviors (ranging from delinquency and teen pregnancy to depression and anxiety). He has published over 200 articles and book chapters, and is the author of several books. Allen is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Society for Research in Adolescence. He has received numerous awards for his research, including the William T. Grant Faculty Scholar Award, and the Spencer Foundation Fellowship. Allen is a passionate advocate for the use of research to improve the lives of adolescents. He is a strong believer in the power of relationships to promote healthy development, and his research has helped to shed light on the importance of supportive family and peer relationships for adolescents. He is also a strong advocate for prevention programs that can help to reduce the risk of problematic behaviors in adolescence.
