Postdoctoral Researcher in Dermatology, University of California, San Diego

Postdoctoral Researcher in Dermatology, University of California, San Diego Originally from Troyes in Champagne Ardenne, France, I have always wanted to work in the field of biology. So I turned to a degree in Biology and Biochemistry in Reims in the Marne. Having thirst for knowledge, I then joined a Master of Applied Microbiology and Biological Engineering at the University Paris Sud, in which I fully bloomed. After completing a six-month internship, I had the opportunity to continue on the same theme, thanks to a thesis conducted within the UMR Micalis in collaboration between CLARINS.

Susan Gair

Adjunct Associate Professor, College of Arts, Society & Education, James Cook University

Adjunct Associate Professor, College of Arts, Society & Education, James Cook University Susan is a social work scholar with more than two decades of teaching, research, writing and practice in her discipline. Her research, practice, teaching and community service has focused on the advancement of social justice, reconciliation, and improved social policy and social work practice, particularly in regional Australia. Key areas of her past research and its application to professional practice have included child adoption policy and practice; working respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander colleagues and communities; and cultivating empathy for improved social work practice and research. Recent projects include three partnership collaborations. These focused on: exploring grandparents’ reduced or lost contact with grandchildren after child protection intervention; a national partnership looking at student poverty and its impacts on study success; and more recently a partnership project with a diversionary service looking at the perceptions of young people at risk of offending about services provided to them. Her research has helped inform Government policies and practices, for example the Commonwealth Inquiry into Forced Adoption and a recent Senate Inquiry into Government income support for tertiary students. Her commitment to reconciliation, social justice and closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians has included presenting writing groups in regional and rural communities. With Aboriginal colleagues, Susan have contributed to informing national and international social work programs. In 2016, she was awarded two Vice Chancellor’s Awards for leadership (with colleagues). In 2017, she was awarded a Citation for Outstanding contribution to Teaching that embodies the spirit of reconciliation and working in partnership.

Scott Carver

Associate Professor, Wildlife Ecology, University of Tasmania

Associate Professor, Wildlife Ecology, University of Tasmania Scott joined the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Tasmania (UTAS) in 2012. He continues his research into disease transmission in puma, bobcats and domestic cats in North America, focussing on Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (an analogue for HIV in humans). He has reengaged in mosquito-borne disease ecology in Australia, picking up where his PhD finished, with specific emphasis to understand the complex ecology and epidemiology of Ross River virus, particularly the role of marsupial hosts in human epidemic patterns. He has also established new research directions. A major focus of his lab is studying sarcoptic mange, which is the most threatening disease of wombats in Australia, and infects >100 species of mammal globally. He collaborates and co-supervises students studying Tasmanian Devil Facial Tumour Disease. He also works closely with colleagues studying the epidemiology Chlamydial infections among agricultural animals and koala, and vaccine development.
