Visiting Research Fellow, Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP), University of Surrey

Visiting Research Fellow, Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP), University of Surrey Steve’s research interests intersect the moral, psychosocial, economic and political dimensions of the transition to sustainable prosperity. In addition to his research at the University of Surrey, he is part of the State of Tipping Points working group based at the Global Systems Institute, University of Exeter. This working group is producing the first State of Tipping Points Report to be launched at the COP 28 Conference, December 2023. Linked to this, Steve is on the editorial team of a special issue of Earth System Dynamics journal. Steve’s PhD at the University of Surrey, supervised by Ian Christie, Alex Penn and Birgitta Gatersleben, addressed knowledge gaps in the field of climate politics and policy advocacy in the UK. He developed a typology and method for mapping the UK ‘ecosystem’ of actors, qualitatively analysed 100 expert views on the transition to net zero carbon, and argued for a more radical, science- and equity-based ‘rapid transition’ to net zero by 2035 at the latest. Steve has authored a variety of peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, policy papers, articles and blogs. He was expert reviewer to the UN IPCC’s Second-Order Draft of Working Group III Sixth Assessment Report (AR6-WG3), and to the Swiss National Science Foundation.

Sophie Hocking

Lecturer in Biosciences, Swansea University

Lecturer in Biosciences, Swansea University I am a lecturer in Biosciences at Swansea University and an early-career researcher specialising in plant ecology, conservation and invasion ecology. My research at undergraduate and master's level focused on plant conservation, investigating the ecology of nationally scarce plants such as marsh pea, the rare and endemic dune gentian, as well as the endangered fen orchid. My PhD investigated the environmental impacts of Japanese knotweed and its management, and how best practice can be enhanced through integration with the wider environment and community ecology to aid post-treatment restoration. By applying ecological theory to knotweed invasion, I try to develop understanding of potential restoration methods for habitat recovery, involving a large-scale restoration field trial. I have also studied the impacts of knotweed management on the soil microbiome using eDNA metabarcoding, and am interested in the true sustainability of these management methods, using life cycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate their wider environmental impacts with the aim of enhancing management efficacy and mediating human impacts on the environment.

Lecturer, Monash University

Lecturer, Monash University Dr Scarlett Howard is a lecturer and research group leader in the School of Biological Sciences at Monash University. Her research spans cognition, behaviour, pollination, ecology, zoology, neurobiology, environmental change, and bio-inspired solutions. She predominantly works with bees and other insects to explore the cognitive abilities of miniature insect brains. Her work on honeybee cognition and pollination spans between collaborations across the world. Scarlett has previously worked at the Centre for Integrative Ecology (CIE), School of Life and Environmental Sciences at Deakin University, the Bio-Inspired Digital Sensing (BIDS) Lab, School of Media and Communication at RMIT University, the School of BioSciences at the University of Melbourne, the Experience-Dependent Plasticity in Insects (EXPLAIN) Team in the Research Center on Animal Cognition (CRCA) with CNRS - Université Toulouse III - Paul Sabatier (Toulouse, France).

Lecturer in Marketing, Bangor University

Lecturer in Marketing, Bangor University Graduate of Bangor University, completed a PhD in Place Branding. I sit on the management board for the 'Places of Climate Change' (PloCC) Research Centre at the University, am an editorial board member for the Journal of Place Management and Development, and a member of the scientific committee for the International Place Branding Association (IPBA). My research is place focused considering aspects of the place branding process from various perspectives, but more recently looking at sustainability, sustainable tourism, and places and climate change.
