2019 Met Gala Set to Cause Controversy with Its Theme

The 2019 Met Gala is set to turn heads and spark offense as the theme of next year’s event is reportedly going to be "Camp: Notes on Fashion.” The decision to adopt this theme is largely influenced by leading curator Andrew Bolton’s sentiment regarding Camp’s relevance to the brewing political climate we see today, E! News reported.

This 2019 Met Gala theme is heavily inspired by Susan Sontag’s legendary 1964 essay, “Notes on 'Camp.'” For the uninitiated, Camp is an aesthetic form that celebrates the things that don’t coincide with the notion of modernism. It elevates aspects that are generally considered offensive and in bad taste.

What’s more, Camp breaks away from the idea of high art, where beauty and value dominate the field. Instead, this aesthetic style draws its strength from being audacious and challenging to what is normally considered the norm, delighting in rudeness instead of modesty. If this is Bolton’s way of using fashion to draw attention to the current political atmosphere, then Camp would be the perfect medium for the 2019 Met Gala.

As for the sponsor, Gucci has been chosen to oversee the prestigious fashion gathering as the brand built its name by being audacious itself. And since fashion audacity is going to dominate the 2019 Met Gala, Lady Gaga has been selected to helm the event alongside Harry Styles and Serena Williams.

It goes without saying that the 2019 Met Gala will be an interesting event to witness, especially since challenging society’s norms always creates friction between conservatives and innovators. Even this year’s Met Gala received quite a bit of criticism coming from the Christian community as its theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.”

Although the event received blessing from the Vatican itself, the gathering still drew the ire of a lot of conservative Christians across the globe. The 2019 Met Gala, however, will not have the same backing as the Vatican and will have to rely on the open-mindedness of people in order for them to truly appreciate the message of the chosen theme.
