Marvel's television spin-off based on the enigmatic organization that helped build the first Avengers team has fans worried that it is in troubled waters right now. Even with assurances from network executives, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and its dedicated following may have valid reasons for being worried about the show's future.
Earlier in the year, ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey confirmed that “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” would be returning with a truncated season run of 13 episodes rather than the usual 22 episodes. Dungey also confirmed that ABC has no plans of shutting down the show after “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” season 6 anytime soon.
But more recent news that Disney is working on expanding Marvel's television programming to focus on fan-favorite characters such as Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) may make pursuing further installments of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” obsolete. While speculation about the upcoming shows eventually replacing “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” has yet to be confirmed, at least fans will still have “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” season 6 to share adventures with the show's beloved cast.
Amidst the speculation, fans will be glad to know that Clark Gregg will be returning with “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”season 6. But with Clark Gregg's return to the silver screen in “Captain Marvel,” fans might not see him as Phil Coulson anytime soon. What fans will get is Clark Gregg directing the upcoming installment's premiere episode.
Gregg has already directed the “Fun & Games” episode from season 5 and has two feature films directed under his belt. While he will not be returning as the beloved character, fans will appreciate the humor in having Clark Gregg still be the “Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.” when “Agents of “S.H.I.E.L.D.” season 6 returns with its season premiere episode.
Fans of the show can look forward to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s further adventures when “Agents of “S.H.I.E.L.D.” season 6 premieres sometime in July 2019.
