Amazon is significantly deepening its artificial intelligence strategy by announcing a new investment of $5 billion in AI firm Anthropic, with the potential to reach up to $25 billion based on performance milestones. This move builds on Amazon’s earlier $8 billion commitment, reinforcing a long-term partnership focused on advancing generative AI and cloud computing through Amazon Web Services (AWS).
As part of the expanded agreement, Anthropic plans to spend over $100 billion خلال the next decade on AWS infrastructure. A key component of this collaboration is Anthropic’s use of Amazon’s custom-built Trainium chips, securing up to 5 gigawatts of computing capacity to train and deploy its Claude AI models. The partnership also includes access to next-generation chips such as Trainium2, Trainium3, Trainium4, and future iterations, positioning AWS as a major player in AI hardware.
Anthropic will also leverage tens of millions of Amazon’s Graviton CPU cores, further integrating its AI workloads into AWS’s ecosystem. Trainium3 capacity is expected to come online within the year, alongside expanded AI inference capabilities across Asia and Europe, enhancing global reach and performance.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy previously highlighted in a shareholder letter that the company’s custom chip business is rapidly growing, doubling its annual revenue run rate to more than $20 billion. This growth reflects a broader industry shift, as major tech companies increasingly develop in-house chips to reduce reliance on suppliers like Nvidia. Jassy also hinted at future opportunities to sell Amazon’s AI chips to third-party customers due to rising demand.
The partnership simplifies access for AWS customers, allowing them to use Anthropic’s Claude AI platform directly through their existing AWS accounts without additional billing or credentials. Integration with AWS security and monitoring tools ensures seamless adoption.
With over 100,000 customers already using Claude through Amazon Bedrock, this collaboration, including projects like the massive Rainier compute cluster, underscores Amazon’s commitment to leading the AI infrastructure market while enabling scalable, enterprise-grade AI solutions.
