Apple Eyes AI Future: No Chatbot in iOS 18 but Plans AI App Store Reveal

WWDC 2024 anticipates Apple's bold step into AI with the introduction of an AI App Store.

Apple has decided against launching its own ChatGPT-like AI chatbot in the upcoming iOS 18 update. Instead, it will focus on unveiling an AI App Store at WWDC 2024, signaling a major shift in its AI strategy.

Apple's WWDC 2024 to Spotlight AI Innovations, No Chatbot for iOS 18 Yet

Apple has yet to make plans to launch its generative AI chatbot with its following major software updates, including iOS 18 for the iPhone, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. He also stated that Apple has talked with companies such as Google, OpenAI, and Baidu about potential generative AI partnerships.

According to recent reports (via MacRumors), Apple has considered licensing existing chatbots such as Google's Gemini and OpenAI's ChatGPT. Still, the possibility of Apple developing its chatbot for iOS 18 has yet to be explicitly ruled out.

Gurman still expects AI to be a significant focus at Apple's recently announced WWDC 2024 developers conference. He reiterated that Apple intends to introduce new AI features that will "assist users in their daily lives," but he did not provide any specifics. He previously stated that generative AI will help Siri answer more complex questions and allow the Messages app to auto-complete sentences. Other apps, including Apple Music, Shortcuts, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, are expected to add generative AI functionality.

Apple previously stated that it would make generative AI announcements later this year, and the company hinted at it again today. WWDC 2024 takes place from June 10 to June 14, with video sessions available on YouTube for the first time.

The first iOS 18 beta should be available to developers following the WWDC keynote, with the update expected to be available to all users in September.

Apple Poised to Unveil AI App Store at WWDC 2024, Pioneering a New AI Ecosystem

In an era when artificial intelligence is being integrated into as many aspects of technology as possible, Apple has been relatively quiet about this new technology. For reference, some people were responsible for counting and reporting how many times Google mentioned "AI" at Google I/O last year.

According to Android Headlines, Apple's turn may come at the upcoming WWDC event in June. Apple could announce an 'AI App Store' at WWDC 2024. Analysts speculate that Apple's strategy may include developing a dedicated platform for AI applications. This follows news of Apple's potential introduction of AI-powered ads in the App Store.

Ben Reitzes, head of technology research at Melius Research, predicts that Apple will announce plans for an AI App Store at the conference. It will provide consumers with access to a diverse set of AI apps from various vendors.

Reitzes parallels Apple's history of disruptive innovation and its potential approach to artificial intelligence. He suggests that the company work with industry leaders to create an ecosystem for AI applications similar to what Apple did with the iTunes Store and iPhone App Store. Just as Steve Jobs persuaded record labels to accept digital downloads, Apple could use its clout to encourage developers to develop and distribute AI apps on its platform.

Apple to Enhance Siri, Eyes AI App Store for Broadening Developer and User Horizons

Apple will provide its own AI services, including improvements to Siri. Additionally, Reitzes envisions a larger marketplace in which third-party developers can contribute. This is consistent with previous reports from analysts such as Wedbush, which predict the emergence of a separate AI App Store. Such a platform could enable developers to showcase their innovations while also introducing users to new tools for various purposes.

The concept of an AI App Store is somewhat speculative. Apple is reportedly in talks with companies such as Chinese tech giant Baidu and Google. These were intended to investigate partnerships related to AI services. For example, Apple has expressed an interest in Google's Gemini AI to improve Siri's capabilities.

While details are scarce, analysts believe the event will show how consumers can access AI apps. The conference could serve as a forum for developers to learn about opportunities to contribute to the AI ecosystem and for users to imagine the future of AI integration into their daily lives.
